Eind mei strijkt Playgrounds neer in Pakhuis West in Amsterdam voor een nieuwe editie van Blend. Een festival waarin je een catwalk van vernieuwende beeldenmakers en de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in de beeldindustrie te zien krijgt.

De toekomst van het beeld. Daar draait het bij Blend om. Met makers die de grenzen van hun discipline buigen en andere sectoren opzoeken. Ook het snijvlak tussen kunst, wetenschap en journalistiek komt aan bod. Het vertrekpunt is innovatiefbewegend beeld, maar er is ook plek voor muzikanten, illustratoren en grafisch vormgevers die beeld op een vernieuwende wijze inzetten en kunstenaars die in geen enkel ‘hokje’ te duwen zijn. 

Een van de eerste namen die Playgrounds kan bevestigen is de van oorsprong Duitse visual artist Tobias Gremmler. Deze pioneer van mediascenografie, vindt steeds nieuwe wegen in wat visueel mogelijk is in de performing arts. Gremmler is door designNET geprezen als iemand die "de muur tussen virtualiteit en realiteit doorbreekt." Gremmler creëert unieke meeslepende ervaringen voor theater en combineert zijn expertise in digitale media, motion graphics, interface-ontwerp en muziek met gedurfde artistieke verkenning. dansproducties, concerten en tentoonstellingen. Hij werkte onder andere voor Björk, London Symphony Orchestra en Nike.

Blend canceled

We've been already dreading it for some time but we kept on hoping for the best. Alas, Covid-19 made another victim in the festival world, and hosting our beloved Blend is no longer possible due to the new regulations. Health is of the utmost importance and we would never want to bring our artists, audiences and crew in danger. However painful, we wholeheartedly embrace all needed actions to put an end to the spreading of this virus. Thus we are officially cancelling Playgrounds Blend 2020 scheduled to take place on 28 & 29th May, in Amsterdam.  

For those we have bought a ticket, fear not! We will reach out to you later this week with a solution. And be sure we'll set up another Blend in 2021! Also, we came up with a way to still engage with you all! Not one, but two new Online Fests are in the making.

Yes, this spring is all about self-isolation and staying at home! But why not meet online instead? Without further ado, on April 16th you are cordially invited to our very first Playgrounds Online Festival! We will centre the first edition around The Art Department, so expect top notch speakers on design and concept art in animation, films and games. We'll announce the complete line-up soon but we can already confirm the amazing Loish is going to give a talk at our first online festival. 

Fear not, apart from the artist talks we'll have demos, panels and portfolio reviews as well, in a fun, engaging manner! We are happy to partner up with Firestarter Magazine for this online adventure. 
And that's not all! (Possibly) the best news yet: the festival is free of charge! We really want to support the community in this confusing and stressful times. Let's join forces, talk about art, share some energy and get some inspiration!

If circumstances called for us to reinvent our format and test new limits, we thought why not also create a free online edition of Blend? We were so looking forward to our festival celebrating artists bending mediums and shifting limits. So, on April 30th you are welcome to join us for a mix of talks, panels and portfolio reviews. We are very happy to announce Serial Cut, Echoic Audio and Universal Everything have already confirmed for joining the Blend online fest!
